The lowest rank in the Ottoman harem scrubbed floors for nine years and left with a dowry. Not a wage. A house, furniture, a cash settlement and an arranged marriage to a government official, paid for by the palace. It was slavery with a documented exit, and for about three hundred years it was one of the few career ladders in the world that a woman could climb to the top of.
