The city agreed

About this video

A bankrupt man declared himself Emperor of the United States in 1859, and San Francisco simply agreed. Not as a running joke at his expense. Restaurants honoured his currency. The police saluted him. The census recorded his occupation as Emperor. And when he died, something like thirty thousand people came out for the funeral.
