Enceladus is a small moon of Saturn with a global ocean beneath its icy crust. In 2017, NASA's Cassini spacecraft flew through the plumes erupting from its south pole and detected silica nanoparticles — particles that on Earth form in one place only: hydrothermal vents, where hot water meets rock. Which means the same chemistry that feeds life around vents on our own seafloor may be simmering under the ice of a moon nine hundred million miles away. Nobody has been back to look.
