Be careful with the pictures you have seen. Every illustration of this object, including the famous cigar-shaped one, is an artist's reconstruction from a brightness curve. Nobody photographed its surface. It is entirely possible it was flattened like a pancake rather than long like a cigar, and some models actively prefer that.
